Employment

Adjunct Professor

Adjunct Professor positions are now being assigned for Fall 2009. it's not too late to contact us if you would like to teach with us: send your information to Cindy Woodfork (cwoodfo1@gmu.edu).

Graduate Teaching Assistantship

The Department hires approximately 35 GTAs each semester, and receives about 120 applications. Further, many of the 35 positions are filled by GTAs who previously held them, so the number of new positions per semester is sometimes more like 10.

Do not be discouraged! Please apply since we want to hire the best GTAs we can for our students. However, understand that we can only hire a small number of GTAs from the large collection of talented candidates. Good luck with your application!

If you would like to apply for a GTA position with us, please read the following carefully:

  1. If you are an International student, you must have a TOEFL score of at least 250 (or at least 100 for the Internet-based TOEFL). We will verify TOEFL scores of applicants. The School establishes other criteria (including a minimum GPA) which we also verify.
  2. International students hired to lead labs will also be required to take a SPEAK test, and must obtain a score of at least 83% - please contact Melissa Allen at malle2@gmu.edu to schedule. Be aware that Melissa may be away over the winter break: you will have to schedule a SPEAK test in accordance with her schedule. If hired, it is your responsibility to take the SPEAK test on or before January 12, 2010 and to bring results to the Prince William AIT Office.
  3. Applying for a GTA position in no way assures you of a position with our department.
  4. The application deadline is November 27, 2009. At this time, the expected 'hear by' date is December 4, 2009.
  5. If you are hired as a GTA, you must be available, on campus, to meet with the course instructor and/or coordinator by January 12, 2010. Classes begin January 19, 2010.
  6. Please refrain from contacting us (by phone, email or in person) repeatedly about the status of your application; it only delays us further in completing GTA hiring.

To apply for a position as a GTA:

  • Use our new GTA application website
  • This site is available only within the Mason domain; use a vpn to reach it from outside Mason. For details on VPNs at Mason, see the IT&E Access Site
  • Note that while this is a secure website, its certificate is signed by an authority your browser may not know (so you may get a warning about the certificate): continue.
  • You can logout and return later to the site and continue or update your application.

Any email you wish to send (e.g., a résumé, a schedule of your classes, recommendation letter, inquires, or whether you can get to the different campuses) will only be considered if it is sent to aitgta@gmu.edu

We recommend, for security of your information, that you send the email from your GMU email account; it also helps us keep all your information together.

You will be contacted only if we select you.
