Assist with the Implementation and Use of IDS to Identify Security Issues
The need: One student intern, working an average of
20 hours a week, four hours a day.
The prerequisites:
The student will be required to be familiar with TCP/IP and network protocols.
The duties:
The student intern will assist with the implementation and use of an
Intrusion Detection System. The student,under the direction of a Security Engineer, will monitor the system for possible threats and unusual network traffic.
After recognizing the possible problem, the student will help locate and assist with remediation.
The student will gain:
A working knowledge of TCP/IP, general network services and protocols through these activities
Monitoring IDS
Finding and evaluating and re mediating problematic systems on the network
CSIRT related work
The benefit to the university is improved IT security through the identification and remediation of systems that pose a
threat to the university. Additionally,
security will be improved by the regular monitoring and reporting on the IT security health of the University’s network.
The benefit to the student in their studies and in preparing for a job would be the experience and knowledge gained in the development of IT security practices seen in intrusion detection and intrusion prevention and an in-depth experience in analyzing network traffic. They would learn industry standard methods employed in IDS and IPS systems.
Assist with the Implementation and Use of Vulnerability Scanning and Penetration Testing
The need: One student intern, working an average of
20 hours a week. There is a need to coordinate with Networking to conduct scanning on a regular and organized basis. The student can start after the Tenable Vulnerability environment is back on line.
The prerequisites:
The student will be required to have a working knowledge of TCP/IP and general network services, protocols and common Server applications. Additionally, the student must be able to analyze reports and assist with remediating vulnerabilities.
The duties: The intern will conduct scanning of
network devises using the Tenable product.
The student will follow guidelines and scan according to vulnerability rules determined by IT Security staff.
The student will gain:
A working knowledge of a widely used scanning tool (Tenable)
A practical understanding of network operations and coordination
Practical understanding of penetration testing
The benefit to the university is improved IT security through the identification and remediation of vulnerabilities that
pose a threat to the university. The
regular monitoring and reporting on the IT security health of the University’s network will also be a benefit.
The benefit to the student in their studies and preparation for a career would be an in-depth understanding of industry standard practices in vulnerability scanning and penetration testing. They also
would develop skills in communication and client relations by working with systems administrators in remediating system vulnerabilities.
