Transfer Information

The minimum GPA required to apply for the IT program is 2.0.  A higher GpA is recommended, since the program is highly competitive.

Students should meet with an IT advisor immediately upon transferring to GMU to determine which requirements are already met and to develop a plan for meeting the remaining requirements.

General Transfer Information

VCCS Transfer Information

At the time you transferred to George Mason, you might not have received credit for all classes that you had taken at another institution.  If you feel that you did not get credit for some classes which are equal to a George Mason course you should take a description and syllabus of the course to the department that offers the course at George Mason and they can determine if they will accept it or not.  The AIT department cannot make a decision regarding equivalency for courses that are offered outside the AIT department.  If you are looking to waive/ substitute another course for an IT course, then you will need to apply to the AIT department and submit a Substitution/Waiver form along with the appropriate course description and syllabus.

  • Transferring from NVCC with an Associate of Science in Information Technology (A.S.I.T.) Recommended*
  • Transferring with any other VCCS Associate of Science (A.S.) or Associate of Arts (A.A.)
    • All students transferring into GMU with an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts and Science degree from any Virginia Community College System school are exempt from all lower-level GMU General Education requirements.  Students are still required to meet the upper-level Written Communication and Synthesis requirements at GMU.  All IT majors fulfill the Synthesis requirement in the course of the major by taking IT 492.  Students must take ENGL 302 (Business or Natural Science section) to meet the upper-level Written Communication requirement.
    • Use the VCCS Table of Transferable Credits to determine how individual courses transfer.  In order to graduate, students need to complete ENGL 302, all remaining IT major requirements, a total of 120 credits, at least 30 credits at GMU, and at least 45 credits at the 300 level or above.
  • Transferring with an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) or no degree

Additional Information

  • Important Reminders :
    • Once you become a GMU student, you may not transfer courses from other institutions without obtaining the Dean's approval prior to taking the course. (Forms may be obtained in ST 2, room 160 or from the ITE website: ite.gmu.edu.)
    • Transfer students are advised to meet with a GMU advisor to be sure they meet the GMU 30 credit residency requirement and 45 credit upper division requirement. VCCS classes that transfer with the L designation do not count as upper division, even if they equate to an upper division class. See the General Catalog for specific rules and conditions.
  • Get credit for coursework transferred from another institution
Courses can only be applied if they are from accredited institutions and meet our requirements. If the course does not appear on your GMU transcript, you must use the Admissions form available in the IT Programs Office. If the course does appear on the transcript, you will use the GMU substitution form using transfer credits available from registrar.gmu.edu/forms.html. Attach to the form a catalog course description and/or syllabus of the course that you took. The form requires an advisor's signature and must be approved by the Chair or Associate Chair.
